Surf Nation MVP

Spanning from Hawaii all the way to the Ocean State, Surf Soccer Nation consists of 61 partner clubs committed to bringing the "best of the best" youth soccer experiences to its players. At the 2026 Surf Summit in Austin, Texas, Rhode Island Surf was honored as the Surf Nation MVP Club for the 2025 Season, one of the most prestigious awards in the Surf Soccer community.

The award comes on the back of a calendar year that saw Rhode Island Surf teams achieve notable success in the Girls Academy League, USYS National League P.R.O., and many high profile events across the country. One thing is certain, we're just getting started!

A Worthy Winner

Rhode Island Surf's Olivia Sauco has officially been named the 2025 Surf Select Female Player of the Year, becoming the second player in club history to win the award. The honor makes Rhode Island Surf the first club to have two Surf Select Players of the Year amongst its ranks.

With the Surf Select program, Sauco most notably captained the G2013 group to a 2-1 win over FC Barcelona at Surf Cup International in 2024, scoring both goals. She continued that fine form last summer in California, playing a pivotal role in helping her team lift the San Diego Surf Cup. A well-deserved honor for an immensely talented player!

Preseason in the Sun

LAKEWOOD RANCH, FLORIDA: For the second year running, Rhode Island Surf headed south to escape the cold and compete at the Dimitri Cup, one of the largest club tournaments in the country. Over the course of three weekends in January, our B2015 Pre-MLS, B2014 Pre-MLS, B2014 Elite, B2013 MLS NEXT, B2013 RAL, G2013 GA, B2012 MLS NEXT, B2012 RAL, B2011 RAL, and B2011 Premier groups took the field at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Florida with the goal of gaining preseason minutes in the warmer weather.

Our second weekend of travel was filled with highlights as both B2012 RAL and G2013 GA were crowned champions in their respective brackets. A week later, B2011 RAL finished as runners-up in closely-contested final. With plenty of highlights and important lessons learned behind them now, these groups will look ahead to an important Spring with optimism.

SUNRISE, FLORIDA: On the West Coast of Florida, Rhode Island Surf's G2015 and G2014 Pre-GA groups looked to impress at Sunrise Surf's Broward Soccer Cup Winter Classic. The event presented a challenging environment for all three teams, with both U11 groups playing up an age-group and the U12 girls playing on the boys side of the tournament.

The toughness of the competition certainly didn't slow the girls, as a dominant group-stage showing saw all three teams go undefeated, finishing with an overall record of 9-0-0. On top of their impressive results, the three teams managed to only concede a combined three goals in their opening nine games. Both age-groups advanced to the final but came up just short in their tightly-contested matches, capping off an impressive showing by all involved.

Southern Showcase

January saw our DPL groups head south to Tampa Bay, Florida for the Development Player League's Winter Showcase, one of the country's largest events in terms of college scout exposure.

The club was represented by our G2011, G2010, G2009, and GU19 groups in our first major event of 2026, finishing with a solid overall record of 7-3-2. Coach Eric Delgado and his GU19 team secured an impressive three wins from three throughout their time in the sunshine state, scoring eight goals whilst only conceding two. Our players returned to Rhode Island with plenty of minutes in the tank as they look to make a splash in their respective spring campaigns.

New England's Finest

For the second year running, Coach Martin Yarumian and his B2011 MLS NEXT team were nominated for EDP End of the Year Awards. The duo was up for New England Boys Full-Sided Coach of the Year and Boys Full-Sided Team of the Year, respectively. After having narrowly missed out on the prize in 2024, nothing was left in doubt this time around.

On top of their historic run to the USYS National Championships, the group also finished top of the USYS National League New England Conference in their final league campaign during the Spring. Despite going their separate ways at the beginning of the 2025-2026 season (due to rotation reasons), the awards served as a lovely send-off for a coach and team that achieved so much throughout their time together.

Talent on Display

January saw our alliance with Gotham FC highlighted once again as Rhode Island Surf standouts Addison Longval (G2012 GA) and Alexa Barajas (G2009 GA) were selected to participate in the NWSL club's Winter Talent I.D. Showcase.

Rhode Island Surf's participation in the event marked another milestone in our partnership with the reigning NWSL champions. The invite-only showcase featured a total of 96 players from 49 clubs across 18 states and took place in Freehold, New Jersey.

New Threads

Rhode Island Surf's kits for the 2026/2027 season are here! Check out the Surf Nation Ola de Oro collection, featuring next year's new training, away, and goalkeeper kits created by Nike Football. The new threads were introduced at the Surf Nation Summit with a video featuring USWNT and Seattle Reign defender Jordyn Bugg, an alumni of San Diego Surf.

Ola de Oro, or "Golden Wave" represents momentum, unity, and the pursuit of excellence. The collection marks the first time in which Surf Nation will shift away from its traditional blue colors.

College Commitment

The end of January saw Rhode Island Surf standout Colin Blanchette choose the banks of Lake Erie as the next destination in his soccer career. The BU19 MLS NEXT standout will be playing NCAA DI soccer for the Mercyhurst University Lakers this Fall in the NEC.

The defender recently represented the club in the Academy Division Uncommitted All-Star game at MLS NEXT in December, providing a solid display from left back. We wish Colin the best of luck in his next chapter!
